Homeopathy 101: Where Do You Begin?
Curious about homeopathy but not sure where to start? You're in the right place.
Maybe you've heard someone mention Arnica for bumps and bruises. Maybe you've seen those little amber bottles sitting in someone's cupboard. Or maybe you've been curious about homeopathy for years but never really understood what it actually is.
Whatever brought you here, welcome.
I'm Kiki, the founder of House of Vitalis, a qualified AP Homeopath and a conscious mum who believes that understanding our health is one of the most empowering things we can do.
And I believe education is where that journey begins.
So, What Exactly Is Homeopathy?
Homeopathy is a system of medicine developed over 200 years ago by German physician Samuel Hahnemann.
It's based on the principle of “like cures like” the idea that a substance capable of producing certain symptoms in a healthy person may, when prepared homeopathically, be used for someone experiencing similar symptoms.
Homeopathy also takes an individualised approach. In traditional practice, two people experiencing similar symptoms may be matched with different remedies based on their overall symptom picture.
It's one of the reasons I was drawn to studying homeopathy: the emphasis on listening, observing and understanding the individual.
Understanding Homeopathic Remedies
Homeopathic remedies can be prepared from a wide variety of starting materials, including plants, minerals and other substances.
During preparation, the starting material undergoes a process of serial dilution and shaking, traditionally called succussion. The original substance may no longer be chemically detectable but the water retains an energetic imprint of the substance, rather than its physical form. This energetic imprint is considered the foundation of homeopathy.
You may have noticed letters and numbers on homeopathic remedy labels, such as 6C, 30C or 200C.
These describe the preparation's dilution scale and number of dilution steps.
For example:
- 6C: Six successive dilution steps at a ratio of 1:100.
- 30C: Thirty successive dilution steps at a ratio of 1:100.
- 200C: Two hundred successive dilution steps at a ratio of 1:100.
At high dilutions, the preparation is unlikely to contain molecules of the original starting substance.
What Are Fibonacci Homochords?
At House of Vitalis, I use Fibonacci Homochord formulations in my first aid kits and most of my blends made.
Rather than using one homeopathic potency, a Fibonacci Homochord combines multiple potencies of the same remedy in a sequence based on Fibonacci numbers. It's a particular method of homeopathic preparation.
I believe as a homeopath in this modern century we don't have the time and money to be trying every single potency until we get it right. I rather let the body choose which potency fits given in a FH.
Getting to Know Your First Remedies
When you're new to homeopathy, it can feel like there's an endless number of remedies to learn.
My advice?
Start small. Get familiar with the basics. Build your knowledge gradually.
Here are five well-known remedies and the situations they're traditionally associated with in homeopathic literature:
Arnica montana
Traditionally associated with bruising, bumps and physical knocks.
Aconitum napellus (Aconite)
Traditionally associated with sudden fright and the abrupt onset of symptoms.
Belladonna
Traditionally associated with sudden heat, redness and throbbing sensations.
Chamomilla
Traditionally associated with irritability, restlessness and difficult teething periods.
Nux vomica
Traditionally associated with digestive discomfort and overindulgence.
You don't need to memorise dozens of remedies overnight.
Learning their names, traditional associations and preparation methods is a wonderful place to begin exploring the subject.
Homeopathy and Family Life
As a mum, I know how easy it is to feel overwhelmed by the amount of health information available.
One of the reasons I created House of Vitalis was to make learning about homeopathy feel approachable.
For me, conscious parenting is about staying curious, learning continuously and making informed decisions rather than following any one approach unquestioningly.
